Recover focus before naming the form

Retrieval · Baseline and authentic noticing

Place the untouched Lesson 1 recording beside the Lesson 2 dossier containing two successful focus moves and one uncertain seam.

Identify the old information, intended focal value and implied alternative in three examples.

  • For each example, complete: “The audience already has ___; the new or corrective value is ___; the rival possibility is ___.”
  • Mark the word that received strongest prominence in speech, or the wording and punctuation that redirected attention in prose.
  • Do not improve the baseline transcript yet. Today’s controlled alternatives must remain available beside it.
Focus before structure

Choose the context that earns the marked information packaging.

1. When is “It is the documentation rule that excludes some local users” more useful than the neutral clause?

02
Input & Noticing · 10 min

One dossier, several possible focal values

Shared proposition · Vista Line

The draft resident fare can exclude informal tenants because eligibility depends on documents they may not possess. Compare the versions below. The underlying proposition remains stable; the discourse context changes which element deserves focus.

Context changes the packaging

Context or questionResponseFocal value
Is the price the only barrier? It is the documentation rule that may exclude some informal tenants, not simply the two-credit fare. The responsible barrier, contrasted with price
What is missing from the policy? What the draft lacks is a proof route for residents without standard tenancy papers. The absent procedure
What do those residents need?An alternative proof route is what informal tenants need. The required solution, placed first in a reversed pseudo-cleft
Where does the policy fail?Where the policy fails is in treating formal documentation as equivalent to residence. The domain or point of failure
Why does eligibility matter? Why eligibility matters is that access to the reduced fare changes who can use the line routinely. The reason or consequence
Does the discount solve access? The thing is, a lower fare does not help a resident who cannot prove eligibility.A spoken reframe; this discourse frame is related in function but is not a canonical cleft
Context → form

Match each context to the response that packages its focal value most directly.

I It-cleft

W What pseudo-cleft

R Reversed pseudo-cleft

H Where/why pseudo-cleft

T The thing is + clause

N Neutral finite clause

1. Correct the claim that tourists, rather than traders, carry the relocation risk.

2. Answer “What remains unresolved?” by naming future market rent.

3. Begin with “An independent revenue review” as the solution the finance committee requires.

4. Identify the exact respect in which a step-free cabin falls short of a step-free journey.

5. Interrupt an overconfident spoken conclusion and reframe it conversationally.

6. Report the scheduled operating hours when no correction, value gap or reframe is active.

Control points

  • The cleft clause contains a gap corresponding to the focused value: It is the rule that excludes ___.
  • Use who for people and that as the safest general relative marker; avoid duplicating the missing role.
  • Keep tense and modality accurate: It may be the proof rule that excludes… does not become a confirmed cause.
  • With a reversed pseudo-cleft, make sure the fronted value genuinely answers the what clause.
  • Use a neutral clause when no recoverable contrast, question, reframe or evaluative value earns marked packaging.

Cleft prosody · Given frame and focal value

VersionLikely nuclear prominenceMeaning at risk
It is the DOCUMENTATION rule that excludes some users.Documentation, contrasting it with fare level or another ruleEqual stress everywhere weakens the intended correction
What the plan lacks is an independent REVENUE review.Revenue review, as the new value completing the given open questionStrongest stress on what can obscure the value
The CLINIC route is where the access chain breaks.Clinic route, in a reversed pattern that contrasts locationsA pause inside the fronted noun phrase can make the value hard to recover
Formation build

Use one word in each gap. The context determines the cleft family.

1. It the market traders who carry the temporary relocation risk.
2. It was after the announcement the larger nearby rent rise appeared.
3. the consultation omits is a reliable count of unique participants.
4. An independent review is the revenue forecast needs.
5. the access chain breaks is between the station and the clinic.
6. All the current fare rule is classify documents.
7. The the timetable matters is that workers travel outside peak visitor periods.
8. The thing , three weekday meetings cannot represent every resident.

04
Controlled Practice · 12 min

Select the value, build the gap and mark the focus

Key Word Transformation · B2+

Rewrite with the keyword while preserving evidence strength. The parenthetical context makes the marked form purposeful.

The proof requirement, not the two-credit price, may exclude informal tenants. (correct the barrier) IT

The forecast omits how visitor spending would be distributed. (answer what is missing) WHAT

The panel needs an independently reviewed operating forecast. (place the required value first) WHAT

The route fails between the upper station and the clinic. (identify the point of failure) WHERE

The timetable matters because residents make everyday journeys outside visitor peaks. (foreground the explanation) REASON

The published record reports 438 attendances. It does not count unique participants. (limit what it does) ALL

Error Correction

Correct the named fault. A neutral clause is an acceptable repair when no marked focus is warranted.

1. It is the traders who they carry the relocation risk. — duplicated subject

2. What the plan lacks it is a route to the clinic. — doubled value frame

3. A review is that the forecast needs. — reversed pseudo-cleft marker

4. All the fare rule does is classifies documents. — verb after does is

5. It is the rent pattern that definitely proves the line caused displacement. — evidence strength

6. It is at 06:00 that service starts. — no active contrast in a timetable entry

05
Main Task · 11 min

Test three packages against one proposition

Controlled production · Listener focus test

Choose one accurate proposition from your Lesson 1 Vista Line baseline and the uncertain focus seam saved in Lesson 2. You will preserve the proposition while changing the discourse context and packaging.

Produce a neutral version and two earned marked versions, then test whether a listener recovers the intended focal value and evidence strength.

  • Minutes 1–2 · proposition floor: write one neutral clause. Label actor, action, evidence source, modality and causal limit; none may change across versions.
  • Minutes 3–4 · contexts: write two distinct prior questions or rival claims. Choose forms from different families: it-cleft, what/reversed/where/why/all pseudo-cleft, specified-noun pattern or the thing is frame.
  • Minutes 5–6 · build: produce all three versions. Underline the gap’s focused value, bracket the given frame and mark the intended nuclear prominence.
  • Minutes 7–9 · blind test: deliver each context and response in mixed order. The listener records the focal value, implied alternative and evidence strength. Working alone, record, wait and reconstruct without annotations.
  • Minute 10 · compare: identify which marked form improved recovery and which added effort without a discourse gain.
  • Minute 11 · save: retain the neutral control, two marked versions, contexts and listener results beside the original Lesson 1 seam for Lesson 4.

Success evidence

All versions preserve the proposition; each marked form answers a recoverable question or contrast; the cleft gap is complete without a duplicate role; prominence falls on the intended value; and the listener—not the grammar label—shows whether information focus improved.

06
Feedback & Reflection · 5 min

Separate formation, warrant and delivery

Evidence-sized diagnosis

Choose the narrowest diagnosis supported by the result.

1. The it-cleft is well formed, but no rival is present and the listener finds it oddly corrective. What needs work?

2. The context earns a what-cleft, but the learner says “What the plan lacks it is…” What failed?

3. The form and context fit, but the listener focuses on the given frame rather than the value. What should be retested?

Lesson 4 control record

Align each version with its discourse context and blind listener result.

Save one secure form–focus pairing, one repair target and one case where the neutral clause worked better.

  • Cite the exact version and the focal value the listener recovered.
  • Classify any problem as formation, discourse warrant, evidence drift or prosody.
  • Compare Brazilian Portuguese only through a repeated feature in your own recorded examples; otherwise label the transfer hypothesis untested.
07
Wrap-up & Bridge · 3 min

Carry the range into information-flow control

Exit choice

Choose the principle that Lesson 4 will refine.

1. When is an advanced cleft successful?

Standing informal-input bridge

Continue the same long 99% Invisible episode and long-form urban-geography essay. Revisit the two saved focus locations from Lesson 2. For each, create one neutral paraphrase and one cleft or pseudo-cleft paraphrase in your own words; label the prior question, focal value, implied alternative and strongest prominence. Keep the source’s evidence strength unchanged and bring the pair plus listener response to Lesson 4.
