Bring the repair into the draft
Retrieval · Lesson 6 repair record · 4 minutes
Open the before-and-after pair you kept from Lesson 6. If you used a fictional practice case, keep that label visible.
Turn the repair finding into one precise constraint for today’s three-register portfolio rehearsal.
- Read the evidence line, not only the revised version: what could the listener recover after the change?
- Complete: “Across all three pieces, I will preserve ___; when I adapt for the audience, I will change ___.”
- Apply the constraint to this core sentence: The audio will be available only in the listening room on Saturday afternoon.
- Keep the original and the three trial versions. The constraint must remain narrow enough to test at the end of this lesson.
Build every version from one accountable record
Voices of Harbour Street · Final project record
- All four contributors approved the working heading Belonging, in Our Own Words by Monday.
- The information page will be published on Thursday at 10:00.
- Only the heading changes; recordings and existing captions remain unchanged.
- A two-minute excerpt from Noor’s recording may be heard only in the listening room on Saturday from 14:00 to 17:00.
- The audio will not be published online and cannot be downloaded.
- A printed transcript may be read at the desk but may not be copied.
- Visitors should send an RSVP and any access requests through the participation form by Friday at 12:00.
- The feedback form remains open until the following Wednesday at 17:00; the team will review responses before its next session.
Three audiences, three discourse jobs
| Piece | Recipient and relationship | Main discourse job | Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| A · familiar personal email | Rafa, a close collaborator who helped plan the project | Share the result, make the invitation personal and keep the access limits clear | 130 words |
| B · neutral community update | Residents who may know the project but do not know the team | Announce publication, explain the listening arrangement and direct readers to the forms | 150 words |
| C · formal institutional update | The cultural services team that supports the venue | Create a concise decision record, confirm safeguards and state the next review point | 170 words |
Match each planning decision to A, B or C. The factual record belongs in all three pieces; the answer identifies where that discourse move has the strongest audience reason.
A Close collaborator
B Community readers
C Institutional team
1. Open with the shared achievement before moving to public arrangements.
2. Place the date, place and response route where a scanning visitor can retrieve them quickly.
3. Frame the unchanged media and copying prohibition as safeguards in the decision record.
4. Close with a relationship-sensitive invitation to attend rather than an administrative summary.
5. Use headings or compact paragraph openings to separate publication, attendance and feedback.
6. End by naming when responses will be reviewed and what that review informs.
Adapt the bundle, not the proposition
Four controls for each version
| Control | Question before drafting | Evidence in the finished piece |
|---|---|---|
| Content | Have certainty, permission, prohibition, time and participant stayed exact? | All eight facts remain recoverable; no invented motive or promise appears |
| Organization | What does this recipient need first, and what action should follow? | The opening, paragraph order and closing serve that reader’s discourse job |
| Register bundle | Which address, vocabulary, grammar and politeness choices fit this relationship? | Several cues cohere locally; no isolated “formal word” carries the whole shift |
| Delivery | Which words must carry contrast when the opening and key restriction are read aloud? | Chunking and prominence make the decision and boundary easy to recover |
Choose the revision that changes relationship and discourse job while preserving the project record.
1. Personal opening to Rafa
2. Neutral access boundary for community readers
3. Formal closing to cultural services
Rehearse three different information paths
These are paragraph jobs for the neutral community update. Put them in the order that lets readers retrieve the result, access arrangement, required action and later feedback stage.
- Invite feedback through the separate form and give its Wednesday 17:00 closing time.
- Explain when and where Noor’s excerpt may be heard, then state the online, download and transcript-copying limits.
- Close by explaining that the team will review responses before its next session.
- Announce the approved heading and Thursday publication time; confirm that recordings and captions remain unchanged.
- Invite attendance and direct RSVP and access requests to the participation form by Friday at 12:00.
Ten-line rehearsal map · No full model
Plan the other two pieces without copying the neutral order mechanically.
Write five paragraph-job lines for Rafa and five for cultural services.
- For Rafa, decide where shared achievement and the personal invitation belong.
- For cultural services, decide where authorization, safeguards and the review trail belong.
- Underline the one fact most at risk of drifting in each plan and attach your Lesson 6 repair constraint.
Draft the complete 450-word triple piece
Unit 37 portfolio rehearsal · Individual writing · 32 minutes
You are the Voices of Harbour Street coordinator. Write the same complete project update for Rafa, community readers and the cultural services team. This is the full written rehearsal carried into the Lesson 8 assessment.
Produce three audience-valid texts with a combined target of exactly 450 words: A 130 + B 150 + C 170.
- Minutes 1–4 · content matrix: put facts 1–8 down the side and A/B/C across the top. Mark where each fact will be recoverable; all three columns need all eight facts, though facts may be compressed or combined.
- Minutes 5–11 · A, 130 words: write the familiar personal email to Rafa. Use shared history and a personal invitation without weakening any public access rule or deadline.
- Minutes 12–19 · B, 150 words: write the neutral community update. Make publication, listening access, response route and feedback stage easy to scan.
- Minutes 20–28 · C, 170 words: write the formal update to cultural services. Record approval, publication, safeguards, visitor action and review procedure concisely.
- Minutes 29–30 · proposition audit: check every name, number, day, time, permission, prohibition and unchanged item against the source record. Remove invented causes, motives and promises.
- Minute 31 · register audit: circle an interacting lexical, grammatical and discourse cue in each piece. Confirm that each bundle fits its relationship rather than merely sounding more elaborate.
- Minute 32 · repair audit: apply the exact Lesson 6 constraint, count 130 + 150 + 170 = 450, and label any unresolved seam for Lesson 8 rather than hiding it.

Spoken handover · Prepare for Lesson 8
Read each opening and the sentence that contains Noor’s listening restriction aloud. Do not rewrite the whole piece during this pass.
Make audience, decision and access boundary recoverable through delivery as well as wording.
- Mark chunk boundaries with / and underline the words carrying new information or contrast.
- Decide where a full form protects a prohibition or contrast and where a reduction supports an unmarked flow.
- Record one take of all six sentences. Keep the writing, annotations and recording for the spoken register-flex demonstration in Lesson 8.
Name the revision that Lesson 8 needs
Choose the feedback that identifies the actual next revision.
1. The personal piece sounds warm, but it says Noor’s recording will be online after Saturday. What comes first?
2. All facts are exact, but the three pieces share the same opening, paragraph order and closing. What does the draft still need?
3. The spoken restriction is hard to recover because every word receives equal stress. What is the narrowest useful rehearsal?
Save the Lesson 8 revision brief
Select one 35–50-word stretch from each piece and compare it with the other two.
Record one meaning repair, one register stretch and one delivery stretch—or state “no repair evidenced” for a category.
- Cite the exact local stretch and the source-record item it must preserve.
- Write one observable revision instruction for the written triple piece.
- Write one observable listener test for the spoken demonstration. Keep both with the 450-word draft.
Carry evidence, not a fresh script
Choose the complete evidence pack for the final written and spoken demonstration.
1. What should move forward from this rehearsal?
Standing informal-input bridge
Before Lesson 8, revisit one legally accessible The Allusionist episode concerned with register and one London Review of Books essay. Use the episode time stamp and essay paragraph opening already recorded. Rehearse one local shift from each source for two different relationships, preserving proposition and attribution; bring the cue-and-effect note rather than copied source language.
