From the room, last lesson

Six sentences collected during the criticism rounds. Every one was understood perfectly, and not one of them was queried at the time.

Error Correction

Six sentences. One article problem each.

1. The young people do not read the newspapers any more.

2. She has worked in the broadcasting for eleven years.

3. The trust in journalists is at its lowest since records began.

4. The listener wants something shorter. — several hundred thousand different people

5. He heard it on the television and then read it in paper.

6. Podcast is a form built for a commute.

The finding

Three habits, and one thing that is audible

Unit 23 established why this error survives: it costs nothing. Nobody misunderstands I like the football, so there is no repair sequence, no confusion and no feedback — and an error with no feedback does not get repaired by time or by exposure. That has not changed, and this is the last time the course treats it directly.

What has changed is what you now have to work with. Unit 23’s second habit — all of them, or these? — is the same question this unit calls class or member, and it now has three patterns behind it instead of one. That is the whole advance, and it is enough.

Three habits carry it from here, and none of them takes more than a few minutes a week. One: the two-pass sweep from Lesson 4, on three hundred words of your own writing, once a week for six weeks. Nothing else you can do produces feedback, so nothing else changes anything. Two: pre-load the four categories, because in real time you cannot check everything — classes of people, fields, bare abstract nouns, media idioms. Three: once a week, take one page of published English and mark every article on it. Noticing in input is what builds the intuition that Portuguese has spent your whole life training away.

And then there is something audible, which is worth the last ten minutes of this lesson because it is quicker to fix than everything above it. English compound nouns take their stress on the first element: NEWSpaper, PRESS conference, SEARCH engine, TALK show. Adjective-plus-noun phrases take it on the second: social MEdia, public oPINion, national NEWSpaper.

Portuguese stresses phrase-finally, so the transfer is systematic and it produces news PAper, press conFERence, search ENgine. Unlike the articles, this one is instantly audible — and unlike the articles, the list is short. Fixing twenty compounds does more for how you sound than a year of article work will.

Discovery Check

Three questions.

1. Why does this error not repair itself over time?

2. What is the advance on Unit 23?

3. Where does the stress go in press conference and in social media?

Five errors, three habits, twenty compounds

What goes wrong, in order of frequency

ErrorExampleRepair
1 · A class of peoplethe young people · the Brazilians · the readersZero plus plural. Young people · Brazilians · readers. The single commonest article error there is.
2 · A field or disciplinethe journalism · the broadcasting · the technologyNo article. Fields, subjects and disciplines take none.
3 · A bare abstract nounthe trust · the life · the historyNo article — unless the words after the noun identify which one. Trust has fallen · the trust between them.
4 · The wrong generic patterna tiger is endangered · the listener wants something shorterMatch the pattern to the claim: members, type, or definition. A demographic is not a type.
5 · The idiom seton the television · go to the work · play pianoon television · go to work · play the piano. A list. There is no rule and there does not need to be.

The three habits, and how long each takes.

1 · The sweep. Two passes on three hundred words of your own writing, once a week for six weeks. Three minutes. This is the only one that produces feedback, and feedback is the only thing that has ever changed this.
2 · The pre-load. Four categories, held in mind while speaking: people, fields, bare abstracts, media idioms. You cannot check everything in real time; you can check four things.
3 · The marked page. Once a week, take a page of published English and circle every article. Two minutes. It builds the noticing that a first language has trained away.

And the compounds, which are audible.

Noun + noun → stress the first: NEWSpaper · PRESS conference · SEARCH engine · TALK show · NEWS anchor · CLICKbait · BROADcast interview · FRONT page.
Adjective + noun → stress the second: social MEdia · public oPINion · national NEWSpaper · mainstream COVerage · digital PLATform.

Say all thirteen aloud twice. Portuguese stresses phrase-finally, so the compounds are the half that goes wrong — and they are the half a listener hears immediately.

Word Formation · B2+

Use the word in capitals to form a word that fits the gap. All eight belong to the vocabulary of media and reporting.

  1. The paper issued a full on the following Tuesday. RETRACT
  2. The claim was widely before anybody checked it. CIRCULATE
  3. The programme was criticised for its . SENSATION
  4. Two of the three claims remain . VERIFY
  5. The report was criticised for a serious in its sourcing. BALANCE
  6. The source insisted on complete . ANONYMOUS
  7. The later coverage was noticeably more . SYMPATHY
  8. Print circulation has fallen since 2010. DRAMATIC
Rule check

Four questions.

1. Which is the commonest article error of all?

2. Where is the stress in press conference?

3. Where is the stress in social media?

4. Which habit actually produces feedback?

A page, swept

Multiple-Choice Cloze · B2+

Eight gaps. Some want an article and some want none.

My father read the same paper for forty years and stopped in 2019, not because of anything it printed but because stopped delivering to the village. He is not, on the whole, interested in and has never owned a device that would show him any. What replaced it was , which he listens to at breakfast and describes, accurately, as worse. can tell you what was on page four; nobody can tell you what was on the radio at ten past eight.I have been thinking about this since, because it is a small case of something larger. was never only about information. It was about a shape — a thing with an edge, produced by people whose names were printed inside it, and finished when you got to the end of it. has no end. That is not a complaint about , who are mostly doing careful work under conditions nobody would choose, and it is not nostalgia either. It is an observation about that used to have a last page.

Error Correction

Eight sentences. Seven need work; one is correct as written.

1. The readers under thirty do not buy the newspapers.

2. She has spent her career in the broadcasting.

3. The trust in institutions has fallen everywhere.

4. The podcast listener wants something shorter. — a very large and varied group

5. He watched it on the television and read about it on internet.

6. The media has been criticised for its coverage. — correct as written

7. Front page is a form with properties.

8. The life of a local reporter is difficult, and the life is short.

05
Communicative Task · 10 min

Set up the habit, and say the compounds

Task card · Pairs · 10 minutes

Six weeks of a habit, set up in five minutes — and thirteen compound nouns said aloud until they stop sounding wrong.

Leave with a scheduled routine and a corrected stress pattern. Both are small; neither happens by itself.

  • 3 minutes · The sweep, scheduled. Name the day, the time and the text: three hundred words of your own writing, two passes, three minutes. Tell your partner. Write it where you will see it.
  • 2 minutes · The pre-load. Say the four categories aloud to each other from memory: people, fields, bare abstracts, media idioms. If you cannot, look once and say them again.
  • 3 minutes · The compounds. Say all thirteen from the card, twice each, with your partner marking any that come out stressed on the second element.
  • 2 minutes · In a sentence. Use four of them in real sentences about your own week, and let your partner listen only for the stress.

The compounds will feel wrong for about a week. Portuguese stress and English compound stress genuinely disagree, so saying NEWSpaper correctly feels like over-emphasis from the inside and sounds entirely neutral from the outside. Trust the outside; your partner is the better instrument here.

Teacher note Do not let the scheduling stage be waved through — a named day and a named text is the difference between a habit and an intention, and this is the last lesson in the course that treats articles at all. The compound-stress work is the fastest visible win in the unit and it is worth ending on it: it is the one thing here that a listener notices immediately, and it is fixed in a week.
06
Feedback · 4 min

What came out stressed backwards

From the compounds

Two questions.

1. How many of the thirteen came out with the stress on the second element?

2. Have you scheduled the weekly sweep?

Wrap-up · 3 min

Invisible, and audible

Exit Check

Two questions. Twenty seconds.

1. Which habit produces feedback?

2. Noun plus noun stresses…

Next. Three hundred and sixty words of media criticism — and a page on which every article choice will be counted, because this is the last time anybody counts them for you.
