Patterns, repaired

A2 Choices
About this lesson ▾

Two error families out of your own three minutes: a verb given the wrong pattern, and a modal given something it refuses. One is vocabulary; one is a rule you now know four times over.

Warm-up · 4 min

Your two against the log

Read out your two errors. Your teacher will say whether each is in the log, and how many times something like it happened.

Warm-up

One question before we open the log.

1. Which of your two errors will be easier to fix?

Teacher note Being explicit about which error is cheap and which is expensive changes how she studies them. The modal rule can be finished today; the verb patterns are a vocabulary project that runs for months.

The log

From Lesson 5 — verbatim

1. You should to go early.

2. I like sitting there with a book.

3. If you do not mind to walk twenty minutes…

4. I would rather to do something quiet.

5. I enjoy to eat there.

6. If you want to eat well, go two streets back.

7. Do you should book?

8. I prefer walking than driving.

Teacher note Swap these for her real log wherever you can. The eight are a representative spread — three modal errors, two -ing-family errors, one prefer error, two correct — so a substitution should keep that shape.
Discovery Check

Read all eight aloud before you answer.

1. How many are completely correct?

2. Sentences 1, 4 and 7 fail the same way. How?

3. Sentences 3 and 5 fail a different way. How?

4. Sentence 7 is Do you should book? What exactly is wrong?

Three families, three fixes

What went wrong, and the one-line rule that fixes it

FamilyWhat it sounds likeThe rule
Modal + somethingshould to go · would rather to do · do you shouldA modal takes the bare verb, no -s, no do. Four refusals, no exceptions.
Wrong patternenjoy to eat · don't mind to walkThe pattern belongs to the verb. Learn it with the word.
prefer … thanprefer walking than drivingprefer A to B. Unpredictable, and it just has to be known.

Family 1 is finishable today. Five modals, four refusals, no exceptions. If you can say the four refusals from memory by the end of this lesson, that error is done.

Family 2 is not. It is a vocabulary project. Every time you meet a new verb, learn what follows it at the same time — the way you learn its spelling.

The four refusals

Put the four things a modal refuses in the order they appear in the log.

Teacher note The order is arguable and she may sequence it differently. What matters is that she can name all four, not the order — say so if she queries it.
Diagnose

Match each log sentence to its family. Three belong to the same one, and two are not errors.

Repair, then produce

Error Correction

The log errors plus four more of the same families. Rewrite each one in full.

1. You should to go early.

2. I would rather to do something quiet.

3. Do you should book?

4. I enjoy to eat there.

5. If you do not mind to walk, go from the station.

6. I prefer walking than driving.

7. He musts book in advance.

8. I want going early.

Teacher note Ask her to name the refusal out loud before each modal repair. Naming it is what makes the rule usable at speed in Phase 05.
Open Cloze · pass 2

No visible errors this time. Write the verb in brackets in the right form.

If you do not mind (get) up early, you should (go) to the market before eight. I love (walk) there — I prefer (walk) to (take) the bus. You must (try) the fish. If you want (eat) properly, go two streets back — and honestly I would rather (queue) there than sit down anywhere near the cathedral.

Communicative Task · 12 min

Three more recommendations, clean

Task card · Speaking

Three different places, or three things to do on a rainy day. Three minutes.

Fewer than three errors from the three families. Your teacher logs again, so the two logs compare directly.

  • Reader first, then the place. Four moves each.
  • Do not slow down. Accuracy at normal speed is the target.
  • The three banned words are still banned.
Teacher note Keep the modal count and the pattern count separate. The modal count should be at or near zero after this lesson — if it is not, the rule has not landed and it is worth another two minutes now rather than another unit later.
Mid-task check

Stop at ninety seconds.

1. Which family is still slipping?

2. Compared with Lesson 5?

Feedback & Reflection · 5 min

Two logs

Self-assessment

Compare the counts your teacher just read.

1. Did the modal errors go down?

2. And the verb patterns?

3. What will you do about the patterns?

Teacher note Put the pattern verbs she got wrong onto a card, each with the form that follows it. This is the clearest SRS case in the unit: fixed lexical items with no derivable rule.

Wrap-up & Bridge · 3 min

Four refusals, from memory

Exit check

Thirty seconds. Match each wrong sentence to the refusal it breaks.

No to
No -s
No -ing
No do

Before Lesson 7. Next lesson you write 160 words: "My Top 3". Food, places or activities — your choice.

Decide which three tonight. Write nothing else.
