Your list

Read out the words you could not say. Describe them if you have to — the sort of place where you stand up and there are no tables.

Describe, then name

Five descriptions, five words.

Tiny, cheap, excellent, and easy to walk past
Not as good as everybody says
Very good, and almost nobody knows about it
Aimed at visitors, and worse because of it
Not cheap, not expensive — fair for what it is

Two recommendations

Version A

There is a good restaurant near the station. The food is very good and it is not expensive. You should go.

Version B

There is a place near the station — a hole in the wall, about eight tables, no sign. It is the best thing I have eaten this year and it costs about twelve euros.

You have to go early or queue, and they do not take bookings. If you hate queuing, go at six. If you do not mind waiting twenty minutes, go at eight and it is better.

It is not for you if you want somewhere quiet. It is very loud and the tables are close together.

Discovery Check

Compare the two.

1. Version A says the food is very good. What does B say instead?

2. B gives two different pieces of advice about when to go. Why?

3. B ends with who it is not for. What does that do?

4. Which version would actually get you to go?

Teacher note The if you… / if you… pair is the highest-value structure in this lesson. It uses the future-time clause from Unit 12 in its simplest form and it is exactly how real recommendations are given.

Recommending for somebody

Four moves

Conditional adviceIf you hate queuing, go at six.Different readers, different advice
Who it is not forIt is not for you if you want somewhere quiet.Makes the rest believable

Preference and evaluation

Tap each. These are what let you recommend something without saying "good" once.

Which move

Match each line to the move it makes.

Name it specifically
A concrete claim
Conditional advice
Who it is not for
An honest reservation
A qualified positive — not immediate, but real

Recommend for somebody specific

Error Correction

Five empty recommendations. Rewrite each with a fact and a reader.

1. It is a very good restaurant.

2. You should visit the museum.

3. The beach is nice.

4. Everybody likes that bar.

5. The market is interesting.

Teacher note Mark by one test: could somebody act on this sentence? If they still have to ask when, where or how much, it is not there yet.
Open Cloze

One word per gap, all from Phase 03.

There is a place near the station — a hidden , honestly. Eight tables, no sign. The prices are very : about twelve euros. The one near the cathedral is much more famous and completely — very , and twice the price. If you queuing, go at six. It is not you if you want somewhere quiet. It is loud, but it on you.

05
Communicative Task · 12 min

Recommend to two different people

Task card · Speaking

Two visitors to your city: one who has one evening, one who has three days and no money.

Ninety seconds each. Same city, completely different recommendations, and each one has to name who it is for.

  • For each: name it specifically, one concrete claim, conditional advice, and who it is not for.
  • Use at least three words from Phase 03.
  • Nothing may be described as good, nice or interesting. Those three words are banned.
Teacher note Enforce the banned words strictly — stop her every time. Removing the three easy adjectives is what forces the facts, and it does more for the vocabulary than any list.
Before you speak

One decision.

1. A famous place that is not as good as people say. Which?

06
Feedback & Reflection · 5 min

Off your own list

Self-assessment

Look back at the list you brought.

1. How many of the words you could not say can you say now?

2. How many times were you stopped for a banned word?

3. What did you say instead?

Teacher note Anything still unnamed, name it now and write it down. This is the last lesson with room for new vocabulary — Lessons 5 to 8 are production and repair.

Wrap-up & Bridge · 3 min

Before the long turn

Exit check

One question.

1. What replaces it is a very good restaurant?

Before Lesson 5. Next lesson you recommend three places or activities in your city, for three minutes.

Choose the three tonight. Nothing else — the recommendation is built in the lesson.
