Explaining Brazil to California

B2 The Professional Voice
About this lesson ▾

Two countries, two words for something that sounds similar, and two different regulatory systems behind them. Getting this explanation right is not a courtesy to a curious American — it is the one piece of professional accuracy the whole unit turns on.

Your sentence

Read your homework sentence explaining paisagismo. Your teacher will ask one follow-up question.

The two-country problem

In California, "Landscape Architect" is a title the state controls — earning it means going through the California Architects Board, with accredited education, an exam, and supervised experience. "Landscape Designer" carries no such requirement; it describes the work, not a licence to a protected title. Your B-C27 sits on the designer/contractor side of that line, not the architect side.

In Brazil, paisagismo is the general term for the craft — landscape design broadly — and the two systems do not map onto each other one-to-one. The honest answer to "so are you an architect back home?" is not a single word in either language; it is an explanation of two different systems that happen to use similar-sounding titles.

Teacher note Do not let her reach for a one-word translation under pressure — that is exactly the trap. The correct move, rehearsed in this lesson, is a short explanation of the two systems, not a mapping between two job titles that do not actually correspond.

Explaining a system, not translating a word

Language for the two-country explanation

Listen and repeat.

"The closest equivalent would be" does real work. It signals, in four words, that what follows is an approximation rather than a direct translation — which is exactly true, and saying so up front is more credible than offering a confident one-word answer that overclaims.

Choose the accurate explanation

MCQ Reading

Choose the most accurate response.

1. A prospect asks, "So are you an architect back home?" Best response?

2. Why is B-C27 not a landscape-architecture licence?

3. What is wrong with translating "landscape designer" as a single word into Portuguese and back?

Explain it live

A curious peer, unscripted questions.

Task card

A US colleague at a professional event, genuinely curious, not hostile

Explain your training and your title, live, answering at least three follow-up questions.

  • Use "the closest equivalent would be" at least once.
  • Do not let a one-word translation slip out under pressure.
  • If a question genuinely has no clean answer, say so rather than guessing.
Teacher note Ask at least one question with no clean answer — "so is that the same as our licensing exam?" — and watch whether she says so honestly or reaches for a comforting but inaccurate yes. That moment is the whole point of the lesson.

Did a one-word translation slip out?

Under the third or fourth question, did you reach for a quick, comfortable answer instead of the explanation? That is completely normal under pressure — naming it is how it stops happening.
