Than, That and Agreement

B1 Plants & Schedules
About this lesson ▾

"Than" and "that" sound almost identical in fast speech, and plural agreement slips under pressure in any language. Both are fixable in a single sentence, once you can hear them.

What you noted

Read what you noted from Lessons 3 and 4. Was it "than/that," plural agreement, or something else?

Warm the Concepts

Before you read what you noted, match each pattern name to its example.

"Podocarpus is taller that Pittosporum" instead of "…taller than…"
"These shrub is drought-tolerant" instead of "These shrubs are…"
"more thirsty" instead of "thirstier"

The two patterns

Collected across Lessons 1–5

PatternWhat appearsWhat it should be
that for thanPodocarpus is taller that Pittosporum.Podocarpus is taller than Pittosporum.
Plural agreementThese shrub is drought-tolerant.These shrubs are drought-tolerant.
-er for a long adjectivemore thirstythirstier
Teacher note Replace any row with what she actually produced. The than/that confusion is worth isolating on its own — it is one of the most common errors across L1 backgrounds precisely because the two words are near-homophones in connected speech, not because the grammar rule is unclear.
Discovery Check

Check what the table above actually says.

1. Which pattern in the table is about subject-verb agreement, not word choice?

Than vs. that

WordJobExample
thanJoins two things being comparedtaller than Pittosporum
thatIntroduces a defining clause, or points to somethingthat plant / the one that I chose

The test: if a comparative adjective (taller, more tolerant, thirstier) comes right before it, it is than. If not, it is almost certainly that.

Redo the comparisons

Task card

Your Lesson 3 comparisons, again
