Your chosen detail
Name the detail you chose and roughly how many real steps it involves.
Before you name your detail, remember the target.
1. How many real, dependent steps does your unit task need?
What the sequence has to do
Assessment criteria
| Criterion | What it means | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Order | Exactly eight real, dependent steps, bottom to top | 30% |
| Passive | Present simple passive throughout, no "you" or "we" | 25% |
| Sequencing | At least one "once…has been…" used correctly | 20% |
| Materials | Real material names, correctly countable or uncountable | 25% |
Match each criterion to what it actually means.
Plan the eight steps
On one sheet, before writing: list the layers of your detail bottom to top, and check each one genuinely depends on the one before it. If a step could happen in any order, it is not doing real work in an eight-step sequence — combine it with a neighbour or cut it.
Check you understood the planning rule.
1. If a step in your list could happen in any order, what should you do?
Write and record the sequence
Complete this reminder before you begin.
Written: eight numbered sentences, voice, real materials. Spoken: the same sequence, said — not read word for word.
Portfolio piece 3 of 10
Your own detail · eight steps · written and spoken
Write the eight-step sequence, then record yourself saying it.
- Written: eight numbered sentences, passive voice, real materials.
- Spoken: the same sequence, said naturally — not read word for word.
- Compare the two afterward. They should say the same thing, not sound identical.
Lesson 1, revisited
Put your Lesson 1 patio explanation beside today’s sequence and answer:
- How many real, dependent steps did Lesson 1 actually have?
- Was it passive, or did "you" and "we" appear?
- Did it name real materials, or vague categories?
A final check on the unit. Each sentence has one error.
1. The joists is installed after the rim joist.
2. A concrete was poured for the footing.
3. Once the footing is poured, the post base bolted on.
Unit 3 complete
You can now: read a construction detail bottom to top for real build sequence, describe a process in the passive without naming an actor, use countable and uncountable material nouns correctly, and explain an assembly to someone who has never seen it, with reasons at each step. That is the B1 can-do statement for this unit, and it is signed off.
Next unit: plants and schedules — reading and compiling a plant schedule, describing growth and requirements, and advising a client on plant choice.
Homework before Unit 4. Find a plant schedule or plant list on any of your own drawings. Bring it, or note down three plants you have specified before, from memory.
Last check of the unit.
1. What should you bring for Unit 4?
