Your detail
Name the detail you brought and the materials you can see in it, without describing the order yet.
Before you name your materials, predict:
1. A real detail sheet is drawn in which direction?
A deck-framing detail, read for sequence
Real terms from your own Colonial Ln. and Wooster Ave. sets.
Geosynthetic reinforcement grid will be installed according to the manufacturer instructions.
A typical deck-framing assembly, bottom to top
| Layer | What it is |
|---|---|
| Footing | Concrete poured below frost depth, carries the load into the ground |
| Post base | Galvanized bracket bolted to the footing, holds the post above the concrete |
| Rim joist | The outer joist that the others attach to |
| Joist hanger | Galvanized bracket connecting a joist to the rim joist |
| Decking | The pressure-treated or composite boards you actually walk on |
Notice the direction. Every real detail sheet is drawn bottom to top, because that is also the build order — the footing has to exist before the post base can bolt to it, and the post base before the rim joist can sit on the post. Reading a detail for sequence means reading it from the ground up, even though your eye might land on the decking first because that is the part you can picture.
Check what you just read.
1. Why is a detail sheet drawn bottom to top?
2. What does a post base do?
Bottom to top is first to last
Reading order into sequence
| On the drawing | In your explanation |
|---|---|
| Footing (bottom) | First, the footing is poured. |
| Post base | Then the post base is bolted to the footing. |
| Rim joist | Once the post is set, the rim joist is attached. |
| Decking (top) | Finally, the decking is installed. |
Put these four sentences in the correct build order.
Order it correctly
All the evidence is in Phase 02.
1. What has to exist before the post base can be installed?
2. Why are construction details drawn bottom to top?
3. A joist hanger connects what to what?
Match each layer to its position in the build. Click the layer, then its position.

Task card
The detail you brought
Describe it bottom to top, naming each layer and what depends on what.
- Say which layer has to exist before the next one can go in.
- If you are not certain of the real order, say so — that is useful information for Lesson 3.
- Use at least one "once…has been…" sentence.
Complete this reminder before you describe your own detail.
If you are not of the real order, say so — that is useful information for Lesson 3. Use at least one " …has been…" sentence.
Bottom to top?
Did you naturally start at the bottom, or did you describe the layer you could picture best first?
Each sentence states the build order backwards. Rewrite it correctly.
1. Once the decking is installed, the footing is poured.
2. The rim joist is attached before the post base is bolted on.
Before the next lesson
Homework. Write three sentences about your detail using "is compacted," "is poured" or "is installed" — the passive form, not "you compact" or "we pour."
One check before you go.
1. What form should your three homework sentences use?
